Afterschool Activities

Special instructors as well as some of our own Barrow Street teachers lead the classes. There are many benefits to the after-school programs in addition to learning new skills. The activities foster the development of social skills, support creative play, and involve physical exercise.

The 3s and 4s may enroll in after-school programs during the first and second semesters. However we suggest waiting until the second semester and consulting the Educational Director before enrolling 2s into any extended day programs to allow the child time to get adjusted to school.*

Activities vary each semester, but below we have listed a few recurring classes.

Science

What do children and rocket scientists have in common? They observe their world and ask questions about it, which is what scientific thought is all about! Our science program provides opportunities for children to discover, hypothesize and experiment with their world while learning to use it in their everyday lives.

Super Soccer Stars

Get the ball rolling! Super Soccer Stars, New York City’s most popular soccer development program, is at Barrow Street. Dynamic international coaches work with all students to develop skills, self-confidence and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive environment. Positive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio ensure that each child improves his or her soccer skills through engaging warm-ups, drills, and games.

Bilingual Birdies

The Bilingual Birdie Language Program employs a unique method that makes the rhythm and sounds of a new language come alive through puppetry, singing and movement. Children are born with the ability to hear the sounds of all languages and from birth begin taking in these sounds in preparation to speak. With regular exposure young children are remarkably capable of picking up multiple speech systems.

Cooking

The children acquire basic cooking techniques and learn how to follow simple recipe instructions such as measuring and mixing ingredients together. Each week there is a new recipe that the children can take home and share with their families. The children sample the food they make and sometimes take some home to their families.
